The Migrant Health Service (MHS) is a specialist primary health care service for clients from refugee and asylum-seeking background. Services are targeted towards new arrival clients with complex health and psychosocial issues that are initially unable to be managed in the mainstream health care system.
MHS provides free early intervention and holistic clinical services which promote health and psychosocial wellbeing. The MHS service model aims to reduce barriers to health care, empower clients to become self-reliant and promote access and equity in other sectors.
Face-to-face or telephone interpreters are always available if required.
A multidisciplinary approach is essential for holistic and proactive complex case management. The MHS team includes:

- Optometrists
- Multilingual community health workers
The MHS has two clinical pathways – New Arrival Pathway and Complex Case Pathway:
New arrival pathway – direct referrals from settlement services or the community for newly arrived people with humanitarian visas. Please contact the MHS Nurse Unit Manger or Clinic Nurse on 82373900 for a new arrival Comprehensive Health Assessment appointment and follow up GP management plan.
Complex case pathway – provides a safety net for clients who are struggling to access mainstream primary care services in the post-settlement period – up to 5 years after arrival.

Royal Adelaide Hospital – Adelaide Chest Clinic
The Tuberculosis Program staff at the Chest Clinic are available to assist people who are:
- concerned about their TB status
- suspected by the SA TB Services to be at a higher risk of having TB
- suspected of having been in contact with persons with active TB
- directed by the Department of Immigration as a new permanent arrival to Australia to undergo a further TB check up
Some services require appointments and these can be organised by telephone, fax, post or in person. A referral from a medical practitioner, received prior to the appointment, is preferable. Interpreter services are available but need to be pre-arranged. Please mention this need when the appointment is being made.
